Tour: Sajama National Park (3 days, from La Paz)

The Sajama National Park is located in the Department of Oruro and borders on the Lauca National Park in Chile. The park captivates with its spectacular mountain landscape, dominated by the glaciated volcanic cones of Sajama (with 6,542m the highest mountain in Bolivia) and the twin volcanoes Pomerape and (6222m) and Parinacota (6348m), A multitude of mountain lakes and high Andean marshlands where lamas, alpacas and vicuñas graze, add to the charm.
Sajama National Park is the first protected area to be established in Bolivia in 1939 due to the Kewiña forests that form the highest forest areas in the world.
The park offers visitors a wide range of attractions. In addition to a rich variety of flora and fauna, special geological features such as thermal springs and geysers, it also offers special cultural features such as multi-colored chullpas (pre-Columbian burial towers), rock paintings as well as colonial architecture and art.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Ride from La Paz via Curahuara de Carangas to Sajama National Park

In the morning you leave La Paz and drive in a private vehicle towards the Chilean border to the Sajama National Park. On the way, you visit the colonial church of Curahuara de Carangas, also known as the sixtine chapel of the Andes because of its colorful wall paintings. Crossing the vast expanses of the Altiplano, you visit a complex of ancient burial towers called "Chullpas" or "Tumbas" and stop at spectacular rock formations in the "Valle de Rocas". You arrive in Sajama N.P. in the early afternoon. After a late lunch you visit the native protected Queñua Forest - a forest that grows in regions higher than any other forest in the world. Dinner and overnight in Sajama or Tomarapi. (-/-/-)

Day 2: Sajama National Park and Rio Lauca

Today you do an excursion to the sights of the Rio Lauca. You visit the small church of Macaya, not far from the Laguna Macaya where you see the first flamingos. After crossing the Rio Lauca you visit the impressive colored burial towers called "Chullpares policromas" built by early Aymara cultures. Another highlight is not far away. At the viewpoints of Laguna Saquewa you will observe a multitude of flamingos. Around noon, return to Sajama and dip in the thermal baths between Sajama and Tomarapi to relax from the ride on the bumpy all-wheel tracks of this region. Overnight in Sajama or Tomarapi. (B/-/-)

Day 3: Sajama National Park and return to La Paz

Early in the morning you drive to the "Walla Keris" geyser field to see its activity in the cooler morning hours before the sun warms the air and the spectacle appears less impressive. Afterwards, you have the possibility to hike in the national park with its impressive distant views of the beautifully shaped volcanoes Sajama (6.542 m), and the twin volcanoes Parinacota (6348 m) and Pomerape (6222 m). You can hike from the geyser field (approx. 4400 m) up to the first of three mountain lakes on the Chilean border (at approx. 5000 m altitude). On the way you walk through high-altitude Kewiña forests and see llamas and alpacas. In the late morning, you return to La Paz. In Patacamaya you have the opportunity to taste a specialty of the Altiplano for lunch: Charque de Llama – a delicious combination of sun-dried llama meat with boiled potatoes, large corn kernels and hard-boiled eggs. - END OF OUR SERVICES.
