Tour: Mashaquipe Ecolodge, Madidi National Park & Pampas del Yacuma (4 days, from La Paz)

The Madidi National Park in the heart of the Vilcabamba-Amboró corridor extends over 1,895,750 hectares. This is one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity on our planet. It includes protected areas in both Peru and Bolivia and serves as a link between two of the most famous ecosystems in South America: the Andes and the Amazon region, which are habitats for unique fauna and flora.
The Madidi National Park is home to ethnic groups such as Tacanas, Chimanes, Mosetenes and Esse Ejas, descendants of the first Arawak incursions in the area over 5,000 years ago. These are the indigenous communities living here that continue to preserve their lifestyle, cosmovision and traditions. These people, as the region's native guides, give visitors an interpretation of the forest with a good mix of scientific knowledge and wisdom from their ancestors.

Itinerary

First day: Flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque, and boat ride into Madidi National Park

Pick up at the hotel or at the airport in Rurrenabaque and transfer to the boat mooring at Río Beni, that takes you to the Madidi National Park (The boats are covered, offer comfortable seating and are equipped with life jackets, rain ponchos and first aid kits. A maximum of 10 passengers per boat). You enjoy the wonderful view of the Cañón del Bala, a bottleneck of the Río Beni, and then you continue on the Tuichi River into Madidi National Park. The flora, fauna and the Bolivian Amazonian landscape are simply spectacular. If you have binoculars with you - so much the better. The river trip usually takes about 3 hours. Arrive at the lodge at noon, where you will be welcomed with a welcome drink. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, walk along one of the paths around the lodge. The guide tells you about plants, timber, palm trees and the sustainable use of existing natural resources. With a little luck, you may see monkeys, wild boars, birds, or insects. Return to the lodge. Dinner and night's rest. Overnight in Mashaquipe Ecolodge in Madidi National Park (-/L/D)

Second day: Madidi National Park

After breakfast, make your way to the Parrot Cliff, one of the best places in Madidi National Park to spot parrots, parakeets and other birds. A sometimes exhausting walk takes you there. On the way you will see giant trees and learn interesting facts about the forest and the plant and animal life in the park. Once at the cliff, you can not only watch birds, but from here you have a breathtaking view over the region of the Amazon lowlands with its many rivers. Hike back down to the Tuichi River and then float down the river in a raft for 2 hours (a motorized boat is available for those who don't want to go on the raft). Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon there are various activities to choose from: production of traditional handicrafts, or a steady hand and staying power while fishing. Overnight in Mashaquipe Ecolodge in Madidi National Park (B/L/D)

Third day: Madidi National Park – Rurrenabaque – Pampas del Yacuma

Early breakfast at 6:00 AM, then a short walk to the jetty and return to Rurrenabaque. Pick up at the jetty in Rurrenabaque and drive in a jeep from Rurrenabaque to Santa Rosa del Yacuma (100 km). During the journey you can already see the first animals such as sloths, anteaters, birds and other animals of the Pampas the road leads through. Around noon arrival in Santa Rosa and short motorboat tour over the Rio Yacuma. Other reptiles and animals living on and in the water can be seen, but also monkeys and birds. Arrival at the ecolodge, accommodation and lunch. After a rest, take a boat trip along the Yacuma River in the afternoon, looking out for caimans, capybaras, turtles and freshwater dolphins, as well as monkeys and many different birds. Possibility to swim with the pink freshwater dolphins. Dinner in the Ecolodge. Overnight at the Las Tortugas Ecolodge in the Pampas del Yacuma (B/L/D)

Fourth day: Pampas del Yacuma – Rurrenabaque

You get up early today (5:30 a.m.) to watch the sunrise, listen to the song of the birds, the cries of the monkeys and animals of the forest at dawn. After breakfast, ride a boat along the Rio Yacuma and hike to look for the gigantic Anaconda. Lunch in the Ecolodge.
