Tour: Lake Titicaca (3 days, from La Paz)

The majestic Lake Titicaca is three hours away from La Paz. With an extension of 176 to 70 kilometers and its altitude of 3,810 meters above sea level, it is the highest navigable lake in the world. The deep blue Lake Titicaca is bordered to the northeast by the snow-capped mountain peaks and glaciers of the Cordillera Real and nourished by their meltwater. Its islands, dotted with archaeological remains, bear witness to the rule of various Aymara civilizations.
The Copacabana bay on the shore of Lake Titicaca was once a "mystical region", a ceremonial center of pre-Columbian cultures. Today the small town in the bay of the same name is a pilgrimage center, where countless pilgrims travel to worship the "Virgen Morena" (Virgen de Copacabana), to receive their blessings and to perform the traditional Ch'alla.

Itinerary:

First day: Journey from La Paz to Copacabana and boat ride from Copacabana to Sun Island

Drive from La Paz to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. You will enjoy wonderful views of the glaciated peaks of the Cordillera Real as you travel north. In Tiquina, on the strait between Lago Menor (Wiñaymarka) and Lago Mayor (Chucuito), you cross over in a small boat powered by an outboard motor. On the other side, you continue in your vehicle. The terraced slopes of the lake shores to the right and left of the road testify to the cultivation of crops by pre-Colombian cultures such as the Chiripa. Arrival in Copacabana at noon. After a walk through the town of Copacabana with its pilgrimage church, dedicated to the Virgin of Copacabana, you can expect a wonderful boat ride across Lake Titicaca to the Isla de Sol (Sun Island). At the Pilkokaina temple, you go ashore again. Overlooking the lake and the Cordillera Real, enjoy a traditional lunch (Apthapi). Then you visit the Pilkokaina Temple, a two-story Inca palace that was once built by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui. From here, a slightly ascending donkey path winds up through agricultural terraces up to the crest of the island and your goal for today - an idyllic accommodation with a magnificent view over the lake. Possibility of further walks across the island and to the Palla Khasa viewpoint in the afternoon or at sunset. Overnight on the sun island. (B/L/-)

Second day: Visit to the north part of the island or visit to Moon Island

Today, you descend to the port of Yumani via the "Mil Escalinatas de Saxamani" - The thousand steps of Saxamani. Only a few meters from the shore, stone steps built by the Incas lead about 60 meters down to the lake. On the top of the stairway, clear water bubbles from a fountain with three holes made of natural stone. The fountain is called "The source of the three waters", which stand for purification, life and youth. Then you take a boat to the northern part of the island. In the village of Challapampa, you will find a small archaeological museum and a snow-white sandy beach. A hike will take you to the Chincana temple complex and the Inca sacred rock, the “Roca Sagrada”. The Chinkana temple (labyrinth) may have been used for meditation or cult purposes, such as the worship of the sun god "Inti" or the nearby sacred rock. Time for a tour of the ruins before returning to the Challapampa jetty, where the boat is waiting for the return trip to Copacabana. Once in Copacabana you continue to La Paz. (B/-/-) (Alternatively, you can visit the moon island with the ruins of the Iñak Uyu temple instead of the northern part of the sun island.) (B/-/-)

OPTIONAL: Add a day to your tour instead of driving back to La Paz, return from Challapampa or Moon Island to the port of Yumani and walk back up to your accommodation. Overnight on the sun island. (B/-/-)
